When I was a kid there was a family of army brats that lived on my street. We played constantly and their oldest brother was a comic collector who introduced me to Alpha Flight and subsequently issue 12, "And One Shall Surely Die".
He called this character "Vindicator Guardian" which to my ear sounded like the coolest fucking thing ever, even if he was wrongly using both names when Mac only went with one or the other (or Weapon Alpha).
I was stunned that a team leader could die, and not even directly by a villain but by his own malfunctioning armor that he had to overload to survive his fight with said villain. James MacDonald Hudson won the war and lost the battle. It was tragic, frustrating, sad and still somehow awesome.
This is exactly the type of cosplay that appeals to me- not just the costume, but a costume that tells the story of a pivotal moment, in this case, the Last Stand of James MacDonald Hudson, Guardian.

I've never read an Alpha Flight comic.
But everyone loves the designs. It would never have occurred to me to have a superhero costume with the Canadian flag.
