YAY - I'm not usually one for serial killer stories, but there are exceptions, and this series is definitely one of them! I can absolutely see why it won an Eisner! The online description sums it up perfectly: "Hannibal meets Silent Night, Deadly Night in this pitch-black holiday horror story that cuts right through our most unspoken cultural taboos."
This series was incredibly easy to slip into and kept me engaged from beginning to end. I was completely immersed in the story, never once feeling like it strayed from its intended path. The interior artwork perfectly captured the tone and emotional beats, delivering exactly what the story needed to hit as hard as it did.
I also appreciated the underlying commentary on a criminal justice system that too often fails to uncover the truth, allowing bias and prejudice to dictate outcomes instead of pursuing genuine justice.
My only stupid minor complaint is that the trade paperback covers don't do the series justice. The Deluxe Edition cover is awesome, but the individual TPB covers feel pretty lackluster in comparison. A small gripe for an otherwise fantastic series!
DORK PLAN: I’m going to read one TPB a day from my 5,000+ strong TPB collection. I’ll post the one I read here the next day with a YAY or NAY, and maybe a line or two about what I thought. NOTE: Got a TPB you want me to read? Drop it in the comments! If I have it, I’ll give it a review.
