In early 1990, Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme #15, titled "The Vampiric Verses Part 2 of 5", featured a cover image that closely resembled singer Amy Grant, taken from her album Amy Grant – The Collection.
Later that year, in April, Grant filed a lawsuit against Marvel Entertainment Group in the U.S. District Court. Her claim wasn’t based on copyright infringement, as the photograph in question was owned by the photographer, but rather on the perceived negative impact of her image being linked to the occult. Grant argued that such an association could tarnish her reputation within the Christian music community.
In early 1991, the case was settled out of court, with both parties reaching a consent decree. Marvel did not admit any liability or wrongdoing, and the terms of the settlement were sealed. By the time the case was resolved, it was too late for Marvel to recall the issue, and as a result, the comic book was widely distributed. Today, Doctor Strange #15 remains readily available for purchase at a minimal cost.
