At the time, this controversy seemed needless and contrived, something of an arcane conceit fabricated my men in suits who didn't understand the medium. With the benefit of hindsight, I see the power play, in the struggle between creators and franchise owners, remote from the stated goals of those who precipitated these events. The creators, who were as naive as I, swallowed the bait and ran off with the line, only to find themselves inexorably reeled in. So the franchise owners won, but at what price? It seems to me they sacrificed the medium, with few notable exceptions, while not exactly moribund, innovation has retreated into a shell. So--we're left with cinematic and animated interpretations of familiar properties, which while occasionally excellent(Bruce Tim anyone?) I suspect there's a limit to the public's tolerance of the iteration of reboots and derived characters.
